What Is A Search Engine?

January 5, 2009 by D. A. Shaver

Google

A search engine visits web sites using computer programs called robots or spiders. They gather information about web sites in a process called indexing. This information might be in the form of subject matter of the web site and links contained on it pages. The search engine keeps a database of this information, which is then shown to visitors to the search engine web site. Searchers find information by typing in key words or phrases at the search engines website. In order to gather the biggest share of the search market search engines try to have the most informative, relevant listings

Search engines are mysterious entities due to the complexity of the algorithms they contain. The fact that they are constantly changing and evolving while trying to interpret the most relevant responses to a human visitor is the biggest challenge. It is important to keep your mindset human while also knowing that a robot is delivering your results when using a search engine.

I think the easiest way to deal with this is give them the best content you can. I am of the ones who believe you should write for people not search engines. Some goals are best achieved by working on other goals, for example your goal might be to have a high ranking site or page but instead of trying to understand complex algorithms it is better to write your best content and hope it is also ranked high.
